At Connings, we’re all about exceptional produce and bringing the freshest fruit and vegetables from our 40+ crop varieties straight to our two stores. We’re looking for an experienced Agronomist to join our team and take our market garden on the Waimea Plains to the next level.

  • You’ll be the hands-on expert guiding our growing operations. From nursery crop management to quality assurance and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, you’ll play a key role in keeping our crops thriving and our produce top-quality.

    This is a full-time role (45 hours per week) based at the farm on Edens Road, Hope.

    • Overseeing crop planning, production, and monitoring for our diverse market garden

    • Managing crop cycles and overseeing quality assurance and certification processes

    • Advising on and optimising soil nutrition, pest/disease management, irrigation, and farm machinery/agri-tech use

    • Conducting field trials based on scouting and of new varieties

    • Ensuring compliance with environmental and sustainability standards

    • Working closely with our growers and production team to deliver outstanding results

  • We’re looking for someone who:

    • Holds a tertiary qualification in agronomy, plant science or a related field

    • Has at least 3 years’ mix of applied research and practical experience in a commercial growing operation, ideally in market gardening

    • Has in-depth knowledge of crop management, pest and disease control, soil management, weather conditions, quality assurance, environmental regulations, and certification processes

    • Has strong practical skills, mechanical aptitude, and a good knowledge of farm machinery, irrigation, agrichemical spraying and equipment

    • Is curious and passionate about innovative, sustainable farming practices and high-quality produce

    • Has strong leadership and communication skills

    • Growsafe certification is an advantage, but not essential as training can be provided

    • Has great physical stamina and agility to work in an outdoor farming environment.

    • Holds a valid driving license and clean driving record.
